History:

This pastoral district, surveyed in the 1860s, became much more prominent within the then Waggamba Shire after the construction of the railway line from Goondiwindi to Dirranbandi. Talwood established as a service centre and community hub for the surrounding rural properties and remains a major depot for the huge quantities of grain harvested in the local area. The bitumen-sealed road from Goondiwindi to Talwood occurred in 1973.  Joining the existing bitumen highway from St George to Mungindi, known as the Carnarvon Highway from the Qld- NSW border to Roma.
