Council further extends general rates discount

Goondiwindi Regional Council has announced it will further extend the general rates discount until 29 April 2020 in light of the unfolding COVD-19 pandemic.

Mayor of the Goondiwindi region Graeme Scheu said today that he hoped the extension would provide some relief to residents during this uncertain time.

“This is a really tough time for the whole community and I’m sure that a lot of people in our region will be really struggling with how this situation is affecting them,” Cr Scheu said today.

“We’ve had new changes and restrictions coming in daily and I just have to say how proud I am of everyone as a whole for how they’ve been dealing with this.”

Council had already extended the original discount period back in January in recognition of the impact that the drought was having upon the region. Council also decided during its January meeting not to charge interest on unpaid rates until 30 June 2020.

Cr Scheu said that the new Council may consider additional measures of support for residents and local businesses once it is elected.

“This is really an unprecedented event and nobody knows for sure what the situation will look like in two weeks’ time or a month’s time,” the Mayor said.

“To those who have been able to pay their rates early, I want to say thank you and say that we appreciate it. If you haven’t paid yet hopefully this decision provides some relief.”

Payment plans are available through Council. Anyone facing financial difficulties should contact Council as soon as possible to arrange alternative payment options.
