Free livestock handling and transport workshops for Goondiwindi region businesses

Livestock businesses in the Goondiwindi region will have the opportunity to develop their cattle handling and transport skills in a free workshop with renowned industry expert Tom Shephard in the coming weeks.

Three one-day workshops will be held between 8 am – 5 pm on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of August at Frasers Transport Depot Goondiwindi. The sessions will focus on understanding cattle behaviour, handling techniques for road transport, workplace safety and animal health and welfare.

Residents are encouraged to secure their place early, as numbers will be strictly limited.

Goondiwindi Regional Council will utilise Queensland Government funding secured for the Goondiwindi Regional Skills Investment Strategy project to deliver the workshops to residents. Council’s Chief Executive Officer Carl Manton said the workshops would be a great opportunity for Goondiwindi region livestock businesses and their employees to benefit from free industry-endorsed training.

“Council has worked with local industry leaders to build these training sessions and ensure they’re tailored to the needs of those working within the livestock industry,” Mr Manton said.

“The workshops are designed exclusively by industry, for industry – and will be a great opportunity for those who transport or work with livestock to develop their own skills and those of their employees. I’d really encourage anyone working within the livestock supply chain to take this opportunity to hear from one of the best in the business,” he said.

Renowned industry consultant Tom Shephard has managed cattle stations around Australia for 20 years and now delivers training on working safely and efficiently with livestock to businesses all across the country. While the sessions will be tailored to those working throughout the beef supply chain, anyone who works for or operates a livestock business within the Goondiwindi region will be eligible to attend.

The workshops will incorporate theory and practical elements and participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the workshop as a record of their training.

Mr Manton said that local livestock businesses had been instrumental in making the workshops possible for Goondiwindi region producers. If successful locally, the training sessions may be rolled out by industry to other regions across Queensland.

“I have to thank Frasers Livestock Transport and Smithfield Cattle Co for all their support in enabling these workshops for our local producers, as well as the State Government’s Department of Employment, Small Business and Training (DESBT) and the Queensland Trucking Association for their support of this project,” Mr Manton said.
