Mayor Joins Community in Remembrance Day Commemoration
I and my fellow Councillors were honoured to attend the Goondiwindi Remembrance Day service. The laying of a wreath and service run by the local RSL committee provided an opportunity to reflect on the courage and dedication of past and present service personnel and their families, paying tribute to their unwavering commitment to duty and the ultimate sacrifice of many.
Mayor Urges Inland Rail Progress
Last week, I had an opportunity to meet with Queensland's Coordinator-General, Mr Gerard Coggan, the Director General of Transport and Main Roads and Director General of State Development, along with Inland Rail representatives to reinforce the importance of this project to the Goondiwindi region. Our community are frustrated with the unacceptable ongoing delays, and I emphasised the need for certainty for all stakeholders.
Council is enabling Inland Rail progress where we can, including approving a 650-bed camp at the Goondiwindi Showgrounds. After years of collaboration with Inland Rail engineers, we also have strong confidence in the Inland Rail flood study modelling, including testing the model during the 2021 flood season. Whilst we understand the need for a thorough Environmental Impact Study assessment, a timely resolution is required given this projects significance to Queensland. I have also reiterated to the Queensland government that challenges associated with voluntary land negotiations for impacted landholders must be urgently concluded.
Council has invited the Coordinator-General to the region, and we look forward to further discussions on the Inland Rail project in the coming months.
Future of Texas Apex Park Public Toilets Up for Discussion
The Texas Apex Park toilet block needs a costly $250,000 upgrade. Along with ongoing maintenance issues often rendering the toilets out of service, the upgrades are mandatory to meet the Queensland government regulatory requirements of managing sewerage near a waterway. It is further complicated by the flood-prone nature of the existing site and rebuilding to Queensland Transport and Main Roads standards. The proposed amendments would connect the public toilets to the town sewerage supply and avoid ongoing costs, including pumping and flood mitigation to meet environmental regulations.
The existing Apex Park toilets were built more than 40 years ago, and before the Avon Street, All Abilities Park, and Lions Club public toilets have been added to the available amenities in Texas. These more recent facilities are generally servicing the needs of the Texas population, including encouraging RV and caravan visitors into the main street to spend money locally. The Apex Park toilets predominantly cater for truck drivers.
Council is seeking feedback on whether the locals support a $250,000 investment for this purpose. Residents are encouraged to contact Council Customer Service on 4671 7400 or one of our councillors to share their views and discuss this matter further.
There are more than $5 million worth of water and sewerage improvements coming to Texas over the coming years and Council has met with several local community group representatives to discuss how we best undertake consultation and share this information.
Thousands Turn Out for Successful International Legends of League Event
Over the weekend, the International Legends of League event in Goondiwindi drew thousands of local rugby league fans to the Saturday showcase. The visit extended beyond the field, with in-school programs also promoting positive life choices. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this event a success.
Councillors Celebrate Local Student Achievement
It's awards season, and I'm joining my fellow councillors to celebrate the achievements of our local students. This week, I'll be attending the Inglewood State School presentation evening. Schools are the heart of our communities, shaping young minds and fostering a sense of belonging. We're incredibly fortunate to have dedicated teachers who inspire and guide our children. Congratulations to all award recipients and their supportive families and school communities.
