Texas: A Decade of Small Hall Magic

I recently attended the Texas Festival of Small Halls. This exceptional event attracted visitors from far and wide. People from Brisbane and even as far away as 5 hours drive into NSW journeyed to experience the unique ambience of small halls and high-quality live entertainment. The event provided a relaxing and enjoyable night out, with everyone appreciating the diverse performances from both domestic and international artists. Texas has now established itself as the longest-running host within Australia of this Festival of Small Hall events, with a decade of successful performances. I know many are eagerly anticipating many more of these wonderful events being hosted in the region.

Border Councils Unite in Goondiwindi

The Border Regional Organisation of Councils (BROC) recently convened in Goondiwindi, bringing together all 12 councils located east of the Great Dividing Range that straddle the Queensland-New South Wales border. These councils face unique challenges due to the differing processes, systems, and laws between the two states, which can often hinder the daily lives of local businesses and residents.

To lead collaboration, the Goondiwindi Regional Council Deputy Mayor, Mr Rob Mackenzie, was appointed chair of the BROC group for the upcoming term. This appointment demonstrates the Council's commitment to working cooperatively with its neighbouring councils to achieve shared goals. The meeting also welcomed both the Queensland and New South Wales Cross-Border Commissioners for the first time ever, who discussed their progress and priorities at the state level in addressing cross-border issues.

Call for Expressions of Interest: Inglewood Rec Centre

Inglewood residents and businesses are reminded that Council is seeking expressions of interest from anyone interested in purchasing or leasing the Inglewood Recreation Centre site. Applications close on Wednesday, October 23rd and more information can be found on the Council's website or by contacting the customer service team.

Commissioner on a Listening Tour in Texas and Goondiwindi

The Queensland Cross-Border Commissioner has been actively engaged in our region, travelling extensively and meeting with individuals and community groups to gain a deeper understanding of the specific cross-border challenges and frustrations experienced by residents. His two visits to Texas in the past fortnight, where he participated in both the Telstra forum and a targeted meet-and-greet session, were a clear indication of his commitment. Through these interactions, he has identified a wide range of issues and is advocating for a firm commitment from the Queensland government to implement legislative solutions to address these concerns.

Commissioner Encourages Residents to File Complaints

Some border residents are still experiencing delays in receiving the Queensland electricity rebate. The Cross-Border Commissioner has advised that individuals eligible for the subsidy but have yet to receive it should submit their complaints to the Queensland Energy and Water Ombudsman through their online complaints portal.

Thousands Flock to Lanescape Festival

The Lanescape Festival was a resounding success, drawing thousands of attendees for an unforgettable night of entertainment, food, stalls, and community spirit. Food vendors reported overwhelming support, and the new water tower light show was a highlight of the evening. This remarkable light show project, years in the making, is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Lanescape committee. Council is immensely proud to have supported this community group in achieving this incredible feat. The water tower light show will be a valuable asset to our region for years to come, attracting visitors and enhancing the vibrancy of our community. We sincerely thank the local businesses and residents whose support has been invaluable in making this installation a reality.

Mayor thanks the Chamber and the entire community for their collective work in advocating for childcare solutions

Limited access to childcare isn't unique to Goondiwindi. Still, the shortage of childcare places is undoubtedly having an impact on many local businesses. This week's forum provided an opportunity to discuss and consider solutions with key stakeholders, including representatives from TAFE Queensland and the Queensland Department of Small Business and Training. As Mayor, I have advocated numerous times to my state and federal counterparts on the need for change. The council will continue to support the Chamber of Commerce and the local childcare operators in identifying potential solutions.  I thank all those who participated in the forum for giving up their time and sharing their experiences.
