The Texas community is set to benefit from a major upgrade to its sewage infrastructure as Goondiwindi Regional Council announces a $800,000 investment to replace the existing sewage pump station (SPS) on Flemming Street.
Set to begin in May, the upgrade will replace the ageing Texas SPS2 to improve sewage management during flood events and enhance the reliability of the system.
Proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland (W4Q) program in association with Goondiwindi Regional Council. Council received $550,000 in W4Q funding towards the project.
Cr Julia Spicer OAM holds Council’s portfolio for water and sewerage and said the project was prioritised by Council due to current challenges posed by the ageing pump station.
“This upgrade will help mitigate environmental impacts caused during flood events in particular, where the existing infrastructure has struggled to maintain effective operation,” Cr Spicer said. “We are committed to making these essential upgrades to ensure that our communities are better prepared for heavy rain and flood conditions,” she said.
“This upgrade will improve sewage management in the area, reduce environmental risks, and ensure the system operates effectively when it is needed most.”
Mayor of the Goondiwindi Region the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM said there is more than $4 million in Texas sewerage infrastructure improvements planned in the coming few years. “This will be a tremendous investment in Texas sewerage infrastructure, and certainly the biggest spend I’ve seen in my five years as Mayor,” he said.
“We appreciate the support from the Queensland Government, which allows us to carry out these vital projects for the benefit of our residents.”
The upgrade to the Texas pump station is the latest in a series of significant investments in sewage infrastructure across the Goondiwindi Region in recent years, including a $150,000 refurbishment of Goondiwindi SPS6 earlier this year, and a $758,600 upgrade to raise and replace five sewage pump station switchboards in Inglewood in 2024.
The Texas project is expected to be completed by June.
