Council working towards enhanced efficiency through portfolio system

« Back

The Councillor team today confirmed the portfolio system allocations for this council term.

The Mayor, the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM, said it is important to note that under Queensland legislation, all local government decisions require the entire councillor team at a Council meeting to vote; no individual has decision-making capacity.

"The Goondiwindi Regional Council portfolio system eliminates the need for every Councillor to attend every meeting,” said the Mayor.

“Councillors are representatives of the local community, and it is essential that they engage with local community members and attend other information sessions.  However, expecting every Councillor to participate in every meeting opportunity isn't practical.  This portfolio model encourages one Councillor to join as the representative and then report to the Council team.

"It is likely that the nominated portfolio holder may develop a heightened level of knowledge about a particular field in the region.  Local residents of course, can contact any councillor to raise any local government issue.  You can find our mobile numbers and email details on the Council's website or by contacting your nearest Council Customer Service Centre.
