Council Shoots Hoops with Goondiwindi PCYC in New Multicultural Social Basketball Program
Goondiwindi Regional Council is proud to support Goondiwindi PCYC in a one-off social mixed 3x3 basketball program. The program is supported by funding from the Queensland and Australian Government’s Community Recovery and Resilience program under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
The Goondiwindi 3x3 basketball program has the aim of fostering community connectedness and promoting disaster awareness ahead of the upcoming disaster season.
The program, which will be on Wednesday evenings at 6pm, starting 25 September 2024 and running for six weeks, is open to individuals and teams of all skill levels. While teams are comprised of four to five players, individual registrations are also welcome.
To promote on-going connectedness within the community, registration for the program includes PCYC membership for anyone wanting to play who are not yet members.
Cr Kym Skinner, Council’s portfolio holder for Lifestyle and Education, expressed enthusiasm for Council’s ongoing partnership with PCYC and the potential of this program to bring the community together.
“We are delighted to collaborate with PCYC Manager Tammy Bell and the team from Goondiwindi PCYC to offer this opportunity to our community,” Cr Skinner said.
“This initiative not only provides a great opportunity for us to connect with our community, but also serves as a platform to share important disaster preparedness messages. We understand that basketball is popular with a lot of different cultures in our community, and this is a great way for us to come together and meet some new people.”
3x3 basketball is a simplified version of traditional basketball and has experienced a rapid rise in popularity over recent years. This new format features three players on the court per side, using only half of a traditional basketball court, making it an accessible option for players of all ages and abilities.
“We are proud to support programs like this that align with our ongoing community development initiatives and demonstrate our commitment to the wellbeing of Goondiwindi region residents,” Cr Skinner went on to say.
This event complements a range of initiatives that have been funded through financial support from the Queensland Government, including Bush Kids First Aid Workshops, and the Jumpforce skipping program in local schools, both held earlier this year.
“We are very appreciative of the support we have received from the Queensland Government to run these community events and projects throughout the region,” said Cr Skinner.
“We have a few more projects planned before the extended funding program ends in December, so I am encouraging residents to keep checking Council’s Facebook page for updates.”
