Goondiwindi Regional Council is set to commence critical infrastructure upgrades on Kildonan Road to improve four key floodways infamous for causing accessibility issues during periods of heavy rain. The project, which is supported by joint funding from the Australian and Queensland governments under Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), will enhance the road's reliability, safety, and accessibility during floods.

Councillor Jason Watts, portfolio holder for Roads, welcomed the announcement, saying, "These four spots are notorious for causing issues with minor flooding. Whilst we can't totally flood-proof them, the works will go a long way towards delivering a more accessible road network during heavy rain and flash flooding."

"It is great to see funding to replace these floodways to a higher standard, not just repair. Council has long advocated for this, and we hope to see more investment from the Queensland government with this betterment approach,” said Cr Watts.

Works on the floodways are set to commence in mid-October and are expected to be completed by the end of the year. Road users are advised that there will be some delays during construction. Council thanks residents for their patience during this period.

The project, which exceeds $1 million, will be delivered by a combination of Council teams and local subcontractors. “We’re proud to be using local expertise to deliver these important upgrades,” Cr Watts added.

The DRFA program is aimed at assisting communities across Australia to better withstand natural disasters. The funding for this project enables Council to enhance infrastructure beyond simple restoration, reducing the long-term impact of flooding and improving the safety and reliability of local roads.
