Building a region of readers: 400 children now enrolled

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library in the Goondiwindi region has officially reached an exciting new milestone, with the 400th local child now signed up to receive free monthly books through the international literacy program.

Cr Phil O’Shea, portfolio holder for Arts and Culture, said the milestone reflects the strong support from families and the broader community.

“Reading with young children builds confidence, sparks imagination and sets them up for a lifetime of learning,” Cr O’Shea said. “Reaching 400 sign-ups in our region since March 2022 is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the value our community places on giving children the very best start. It’s fantastic to see so many families embracing the program.”

The program, which provides carefully chosen, age-appropriate books to children aged 0-5 years at no cost to families, continues to grow in popularity across the region. Each child receives their own book in the mail every month, helping to foster a love of reading and early learning at home.

Building on the momentum, the upcoming Goondiwindi Pub Choir event in early October will support the program by donating $5 from each ticket sold.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to raise funds for a cause we can all agree excels at supporting children’s literacy,” Cr O’Shea said. “We’d love to see the community come together for a great night out that also gives back to our youngest readers.”

Funds raised will help more local families access the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, allowing more children to experience the magic of books delivered straight to their mailboxes.

The local Dolly Parton Imagination Library initiative is made possible through sponsorship from Council, in partnership with Care Goondiwindi and United Way Australia, as well as contributions from local businesses and community members. Their support ensures the program remains free and accessible for local families. Anyone interested in supporting the initiative is warmly encouraged to get involved.

Any child born from 1 March 2022 who currently resides in the Goondiwindi Local Government Area is eligible to join. Parents and carers are encouraged to register their children (ages 0-5) and become part of the growing number of local families already enjoying the benefits of the program.
