Next week, the Goondiwindi Regional Civic Centre is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of reopening its newly refurbished spaces to the public.

The heritage-listed building was constructed in 1937 for the then Goondiwindi Town Council as Council chambers, offices and a town hall built in the Art Deco style popular in regional centres at the time. Over the years it went through various changes as the needs of the community evolved, and was transformed in 2015 into a welcoming, multi-purpose community facility designed for accessibility and everyday use.

The redevelopment opened the building to the main street and created easy access to the library from both Marshall Street and Bowen Lane, a customer service centre, a visitor information centre, an art gallery, the Gunsynd tribute display, and the much-loved Art Deco cinema and theatre.

Mayor of the Goondiwindi Region, the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM, said the project delivered a much-needed community facility that continues to serve residents and visitors across a wide range of uses.

“The Goondiwindi Civic Centre is far more than a building, it’s a working community space that supports learning, tourism, local events and everyday connection,” Cr Springborg said. “Over the past decade, these facilities have become part of daily life in Goondiwindi, used by families, students, visitors, volunteers and local organisations alike.”

Officially opened by former Mayor Graeme Scheu on 17 December 2015, the Civic Centre has continued to operate as one of the busiest hubs in the town centre.

Cr Susie Kelly, Councils portfolio holder for Rural Services, Community Facilities and Technology, said the Civic Centre would remain a key piece of community infrastructure into the future.

“As our community continues to grow, so too does the importance of spaces like the Civic Centre,” she said. “It provides flexible spaces that can adapt to changing community needs while preserving the heritage character of the building that so many residents value.”

To mark the milestone, residents are invited to join in celebrations on Wednesday 17 December. The day will start at 9:30 am and host a range of children’s activities, a commemorative cake cutting at 10:30 am, a special art exhibition showcasing photography pieces from the very first display held when the centre reopened, and a nostalgic walk down memory lane in the cinema kiosk.

“After 10 years of serving the community, the Goondiwindi Regional Civic Centre continues to stand as a vital local facility, bringing people together, supporting local activities and welcoming residents and visitors through its doors every day,” said Cr Kelly. “I encourage everyone to come along and take part in celebrating this great space.”
