Texas residents are set to benefit from a more reliable water supply, thanks to a water main upgrade on Broadway and Lennon Streets set to commence next month.

Goondiwindi Regional Council will replace around 750m of water main on Broadway Street (from St John Street to Middleton Street) and a section of Lennon Street (from Broadway Street to Avon Street). The work will also likely impact Kemp Street residents.

Cr Julia Spicer OAM holds Council’s portfolio for water and sewerage and said the estimated $360,000 project was prioritised due to ageing infrastructure causing a series of water main breaks affecting residents and businesses in the area.

“This upgrade will ensure more consistent water quality and supply in the affected areas,” Cr Spicer said.

“Our region faces ongoing challenges with ageing infrastructure, especially water mains, many of which are nearing the end of their lifespan. Most of these pipes are around 60 years old.”

The Goondiwindi Region has about 186km of water mains, many of which are reaching the end of their lifespan. This upgrade is part of Council’s ongoing effort to ensure the long-term reliability and quality of water services for the region’s residents and businesses.

“Upgrading and replacing these assets is a massive task, which is why we tackle it bit by bit each year,” Cr Spicer said. “As these water mains approach the end of their useable life, their replacement is becoming more urgent.”

Council typically budgets around $600,000 per year for water main replacements and seeks external funding for additional projects.

“The cost of doing business is only getting more expensive, and these types of projects are no exception,” Cr Spicer said. “Replacing these ageing mains in coming years is crucial to maintaining reliable service in Texas and our other small towns.”

Work on the Broadway and Lennon Street upgrade is expected to begin in May, weather-depending. Council will engage local businesses for quarry and concrete supplies.

During the works, residents and businesses in the affected areas may experience water interruptions, but all affected properties will be notified in advance. Traffic control will be in place, with access to some properties likely impacted at times – affected residents will be advised closer to the time via letterbox drop.
