Council supports Garage Sale Trail to reduce waste across the region

With local waste management costs exceeding $4 million in the current financial year and continuing to rise each year, Goondiwindi Regional Council has thrown its support behind the national Garage Sale Trail 2026.

The Garage Sale Trail is happening on 7-8 and 14-15 November 2026, encouraging communities across Australia to buy, sell, reuse and rehome pre-loved items.

Since launching in 2010, more than four million Australians have participated in Garage Sale Trail, with an estimated 7.2 million pre-loved items given a second life and millions generated for households, charities and community groups.

Cr Rob Mackenzie, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Regulatory Services and Planning, said Council hoped the initiative would help reduce the amount of waste going into landfill or ending up as illegal dumping somewhere in the region.

“Garage Sale Trail gives us all an opportunity to clean out that spare room or shed, and to create a weekend of locals exploring for treasures and hopefully save some items from ending up in landfill.”

“With waste management costs continuing to increase, initiatives that encourage people to reuse and give unwanted items another home are important for our community. It can also be a great way to make a little additional cash for your household or your community group,” Cr Mackenzie said.

Residents can get involved by hosting their own garage sale or exploring local sales and markets across the region. Participation is free, with sellers able to register their garage sale, market, or community event through the Garage Sale Trail website. Participants receive access to promotional materials, tips and support to help make their sale a success.

This program has been running successfully nationally for the last 15 years, and Council is keen to trial the concept and encourage residents to get involved and make the most of the opportunity to declutter, find a bargain and give pre-loved items another chance at life.
