Goondiwindi Regional Council will trial relocating the roadside skip bins currently situated near the Cunningham Highway and Stanthorpe Inglewood Road. This initiative aims to address ongoing issues of illegal dumping reported by residents.

Commencing in early August, the trial will explore the efficacy of moving the roadside skip bins to a new site where there is increased capacity for Council to implement enhanced waste management measures. The trial new site will be approximately 4.5km along the Stanthorpe Inglewood Road. Cr Mackenzie portfolio holder for Waste, Regulatory Services and Planning expressed his frustration with the persistent problem of illegal dumping, stating, "Residents have been reporting issues of illegal dumping at this site for some time. Council shares their frustration; we are disgusted at the illegal dumping behaviour of some people."

Despite Council’s efforts to mitigate the issue, including the introduction of additional bins and increased waste collection, there has been no noticeable improvement in behaviour at the current site. The new location, however, offers significant benefits. If the trial is successful, this will be a more practical site for installing fencing, which will help reduce the impact of loose waste escaping the bins due to wind and animals. Furthermore, the introduction of surveillance cameras will help monitor and deter illegal dumping.

"The existing site is a roadside rest stop, limiting our capacity to install fencing. We also suspect that its proximity to the highway contributes to the overflow and illegal dumping," Cr Mackenzie added.

“Council is hopeful that this new roadside skip bin site will improve the current issue, but it is a trial only, and we will continue to engage with nearby residents and businesses affected by the change and will closely monitor the outcome of this trial. We are also not ruling out trialling other sites into the future if required. We understand your concerns and are working to address them.

"We thank residents for their cooperation as we all strive to keep our region looking tidy and presentable," Cr Mackenzie said.
