Goondiwindi Regional Council is inviting residents of Yelarbon and surrounding communities to attend drop-in information sessions to discuss proposed changes to the Yelarbon waste transfer station. The changes, which are scheduled to be implemented in December 2025, aim to address significant issues with illegal dumping leading to unsustainable operational costs.

The Council is introducing a fob entry system to ensure the facility remains functional, primarily for Yelarbon residents and surrounding ratepayers. This move is necessary due to escalating costs resulting from the illegal and incorrect dumping of waste.

Cr Rob Mackenzie, Deputy Mayor, and portfolio holder for waste, has been actively engaging with the community and is urging residents to attend the sessions.

“We know that the vast majority of Yelarbon locals are doing the right thing, and it's frustrating to see the site being misused. We understand local Yelarbon residents aren't causing this issue, and that's why we're working towards a new solution that involves issuing fobs to only Yelarbon and surrounding users.

“I’ve been out and about distributing FAQ flyers, and the feedback to date is that this solution is genuinely needed,” he said.

The community meetings will provide residents with an opportunity to learn more about the proposed changes, offer suggestions, and raise any concerns they may have.

Council officers will also be on hand to clarify common misconceptions about what is and isn't accepted at the facility.

Information session details:

  • Tuesday 14 October, 9am–12pm, Yelarbon and District Soldiers Memorial Hall
  • Wednesday 15 October, 9am–12 pm, Yelarbon and District Soldiers Memorial Hall

Council officers will also attend the upcoming Yelarbon Community Consultative Committee meeting to answer any further questions.
