With overwhelming support from the Yelarbon community, Council is now moving into the next phase of access management at the Yelarbon Waste Transfer Station.

From January 2026, access to the facility will be via an electronic fob system. This means the facility will no longer be open to the public without registered fob access.

Council is currently compiling an official register of users, based on the available rates information and from those residents that have already contacted Council. Those on our list will receive a letter in the mail outlining the process for registering for their free access fob.

Community members who do not receive a letter – likely to include tenants, farms with multiples households and NSW residents who currently use the Yelarbon Waste Transfer Station, are encouraged to contact Council on waste@grc.qld.gov.au or phone 07 4671 7400 to complete their registration as soon as possible to ensure timely access.

Councillor Rob Mackenzie, Council’s portfolio holder for Waste, Regulatory Services and Planning, said the new access system is the next step in keeping the facility clean and managing costs.

“Introducing an electronic access system will help Council to limit illegal dumping and improve the sites cleanliness. Fobs are scheduled for distribution in December 2025, and users are encouraged to return their registration forms promptly to support a smooth transition,” he said.

Council has installed new entry gates and fob readers in preparation for the rollout and is working closely with the community to ensure access remains simple and convenient for genuine users.

Cr Mackenzie thanked the Yelarbon community, particularly the Yelarbon Post Office, for their support and cooperation in helping introduce this new initiative. “This is a community-led win, and we appreciate the ongoing cooperation from residents and local partners as we move towards a more cost-effective, clean and fair-use system.”

While the fob itself is provided free of charge, residents must register to receive one, as each device will be individually assigned and easily replaced if lost or damaged. Each household can request multiple fobs if needed.
