Goondiwindi a national leader in vaccine rollout with at least 63% of over 16s fully vaccinated against COVID-19

Mayor of the Goondiwindi Region the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM is praising the local vaccine rollout in Goondiwindi with at least 63% of over 16s, fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The number is much higher once you consider that some residents went to Toowoomba and other locations to receive their vaccine, and many more residents are partially vaccinated, with a second dose due in the coming months.

He says the high percentage of vaccine take-up in the Goondiwindi Region makes it a national leader in the vaccine rollout. Nationally, just 20.8% of adults over 16 are fully vaccinated, with 42.44% partially vaccinated. The stats for Queensland are even lower at 19.95% and 38.19% respectively. “I’m very proud of our community and their commitment to protecting themselves and others.  We are well on our way to being 80% fully vaccinated in the coming months” said the Mayor.

His comments come after the final days of the Darling Downs Health Pfizer Super Clinic at the Goondiwindi Hospital, which delivered a total of 5,800 doses of vaccines into people’s arms over two rounds of seven-day clinics. Queensland Health have advised that they have now vaccinated – more than half of the region’s population.

He says these figures make the Goondiwindi Region one of the most vaccinated populations in the country.

“During the first round of the Pfizer Super Clinic, we were able to vaccinate nearly 1,900 people from Goondiwindi alone. It’s a really fantastic achievement from our community,” the Mayor said.

“Once you take into account the number of people who are partially vaccinated with one dose only, and those that may have accessed the vaccine outside of the region, this is a tremendous effort. Vaccination is one of the very best defences we have against this virus and I’m extremely happy to see how well it has been adopted locally.  Being on the border, our towns experience high levels of interstate travel and increased risk.  This puts us in a very strong position, especially as we watch cases continue to surge in New South Wales and now in South East Queensland.

“The Darling Downs Queensland Health team and local medical professionals are to be commended on their commitment to regional towns,” said the Mayor.  “Fortunately for us any local who is still seeking a vaccine, including the 16 to 40 year old’s, Darling Downs Health continue to provide opportunities for our residents to access the Pfizer vaccine”.
