Goondiwindi Region residents and businesses will have the opportunity to ask questions and hear directly from Queensland Government representatives about border restrictions during an online community webinar this week.

Goondiwindi Regional Council is co-ordinating the webinar, which will be held via Zoom on Thursday, 16 September at 3 pm. All residents are invited to attend, including those in our cross-border community in New South Wales.

The one-hour live webinar will feature representatives from the Office of the Chief Health Officer, the Department of Transport and Main Roads, the Queensland Police Service, the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, and AgForce among others.

It will focus on the concerns and challenges specifically facing our border community, with a particular focus on the upcoming harvest season.

Mayor of the Goondiwindi Region the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM will lead a question-and-answer session following the initial presentations. There will be opportunity for the community to submit their own questions to the representatives for response.

Cr Springborg is encouraging local residents and businesses to log-on to the webinar and access accurate information directly related to our region.

“This is a high level of access to some of the main people making the decisions that impact our region,” the Mayor said. “It’s a rare opportunity to get clarification straight from the source.

“Not least, we’ll be hearing from Lynne McKinlay, the Assistant Deputy Director-General of the Office of the Queensland Chief Health Officer, as well as Neil Scales, the Director-General of TMR.

“I’ll be asking them some of the many hundreds of questions raised by our community over recent weeks on the matter of border restrictions. Everything from the capacity of our local hospitals to deal with an outbreak, to the availability of financial and mental health support for our residents,” he said.

“We’ll be seeking more clarification about the upcoming harvest season in particular, including which passes will be required, COVID test requirements, Quarantine Management Plans, E-Gate access and more.

“I’d also like to seek some acknowledgement from our state government representatives about just how severely the ongoing restrictions have impacted families, businesses and communities in our cross-border region.”

The live webinar will be recorded and made available to download from Council’s website shortly after broadcast.
