The Goondiwindi community has successfully hosted “arguably the most successful Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) Bush Councils Convention ever”, says Mayor of the Goondiwindi Region the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM.

The conference is expected to inject more than $100,000 into the local economy after more than 200 mayors, councillors, CEOs, sector experts and guest speakers from across rural, remote and regional Queensland spent the past three days in Goondiwindi.

Numerous Goondiwindi hospitality and retail businesses reporting extremely busy trade over the past week, highlighting the region's capacity to host significant events.

Cr Springborg is thanking the Goondiwindi community for their effort in welcoming the delegates and helping to showcase ‘Regional Australia at its Best’.

“So many of the visiting participants from all over Queensland have been enormously complimentary about our town, which is just fantastic to hear,” Cr Springborg said.

“All have said how wonderfully neat, tidy and welcoming Goondiwindi is, and they’ve also reported great feedback about the availability and range of shopping, dining and hospitality options we have in town,” he said.

“I’ve had reports that this past week has given a boost of thousands of dollars into local businesses.”

Held at the Goondiwindi Waggamba Community Cultural Centre, the Bush Councils Conference tackled critical issues for the bush from disaster management to housing, tourism, roads and education, to workforce and waste.

“When rural, regional and remote councils collaborate like this to share ideas and tackle shared challenges, it helps us to get the best for our communities,” the Mayor said.

“I wish to thank the LGAQ for bringing this fantastic event and opportunity to the Goondiwindi Region - the conference has been immensely successful for the LGAQ and attending councils, and even more so for our local community.”
