Congratulations to our sporting region – Inglewood Roosters and the Goondiwindi Roos

Last Saturday, regional sports had an exciting weekend. The Inglewood Roosters men's rugby league team prevailed over the Texas Terriers in a well-matched game, winning the grand final by a single point. The Goondiwindi Roos men's soccer team were also victorious in the Darling Downs B Grade competition with a score of 3-1. These events drew large crowds from the Darling Downs region and local fans. Congratulations to all the teams participating in the preliminary events, the winners and everyone involved in making this regional sports weekend memorable and safe.

Date Claimer Inglewood Housing Forum Wednesday 4 October

A housing forum is set to be held at Inglewood Civic Centre on Wednesday, 4 October, at 5.30p.m. The forum will serve as a collaborative platform where businesses, organisations, community groups, investors and other regional stakeholders can share their knowledge and ideas. This forum follows the successful information evening held in Texas in partnership with Texas Queensland Incorporated (TQI) last year. Since then, we have seen a significant number of new house lots come onto the real estate market. Attendees will aim to explore the challenges, opportunities, and potential for fostering positive change and growth in Inglewood by sharing their ideas.

It's a big weekend in Goondiwindi

This weekend in Goondiwindi, there are plenty of events to attend, a testament to our strong community spirit, and the vibrancy and diversity of our region.  It started today [Friday] with the three-day Cotton Cutting Championship at the Goondiwindi Showgrounds.  Friday night is Live @ the Hut for those who like to act, dance, and perform on stage. Across the weekend locals and visitors will be enjoying return of the much-anticipated Gourmet in Gundy weekend with celebrity Brisbane Chef Alistair McLeod hosting cooking masterclasses and tastings.  Gourmet in Gundy will showcase the best of our regional produce along with plenty of food stalls and markets. If you've never experienced Gourmet in Gundy, I encourage you to head to the banks of the MacIntyre River and indulge in the culinary delights on offer.

Saturday features the annual two-day carnival clay shooting competition for enthusiasts and the Goondiwindi Races Kleinschmidt Cup at the racecourse.  Sunday is the McIntyre Aero Club and Goondiwindi & District Vehicle Restorers Association Fly-in breakfast at the Goondiwindi Aerodrome. So, take advantage of the opportunity to participate in these events that unite our town.  I'd also like to thank our Council team for the ongoing maintenance and preparation of all our assets; they do a great job in presenting our region well.

Long Drive for Drought

Last Friday, I supported Australian farmers by attending the 'Flanno for a Farmer' fundraiser at the Goondiwindi Showgrounds. The fundraiser was the first of its kind for the Long Drive for Drought, an event that has been running for several years now, where more than 50 Landcruisers travel around 8000 kilometres through Queensland and New South Wales. After breakfast, they left Goondiwindi to travel across the border. Their beneficiary, the Drought Angels, supports thousands of farmers nationwide with financial assistance, mental and well-being support, and care packs. Council supported the Long Drive for Drought event with a donation of $1,000 to assist with their cause.

Early Fire Season

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting an early start to the fire season. Due to above-average wet seasons resulting in a build-up of vegetation, the fire risk has increased in our region as conditions have continued to dry out.  Council encourages residents to be prepared to ensure your home and property are free from potential items that could help fuel a fire by taking preventative measures. If a fire occurs, your property and your loved ones should be ready and know what to do.
