  • The Yelarbon and Talwood Water Treatment Plants (WTP) will undergo upgrades to improve its capabilities in maintaining consistent potable water quality standards
  • Both sites will receive new reservoir mixers
  • Yelarbon reservoir will also receive a new chlorine system, and the Talwood reservoir’s existing chlorination system will be modified

Goondiwindi Regional Council has entered the design phase of a $260,000 project to improve the potable water quality in the Yelarbon and Talwood communities.

The Yelarbon and Talwood Water Treatment Plants (WTP) will undergo upgrades to improve capabilities in maintaining consistent water quality standards. This project ensures that the water supplied to residents meets all necessary consumption standards, reinforcing Council's commitment to public health and safety.

The project's key components include:

  • Installing new reservoir mixers at both sites
  • A new chlorine system for the Yelarbon reservoir
  • Modifying the existing chlorination system for the Talwood reservoir

These upgrades will enhance the network chlorination regime for each town, ultimately improving the water quality and the disinfection processes, especially during periods of low demand.

Funding for this project has been secured through the 2022-2024 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP), with a funding contribution of $156,000. LGGSP funding supports councils to deliver priority infrastructure and essential services. Goondiwindi Regional Council has also contributed $104,000 to the project.

Mayor of the Goondiwindi Regional Council, the Honourable Councillor Lawrence Springborg AM, said Council is committed to prioritising public infrastructure.

"Ensuring the safety and reliability of the potable water supply to Talwood and Yelarbon is of paramount importance to Council," said Mayor Springborg. "Recognising water as a precious resource, we are dedicated to delivering enhanced water quality, benefiting both communities."

Councillor Rick Kearney, who holds Council's portfolio for Water, Sewerage, Local Laws and local Disaster management said Council's ongoing efforts to enhance community well-being through vital infrastructure projects had seen improved water across the region at both Inglewood and Texas Water Treatment Plants as well.

“Inglewood and Texas WTP received new reservoir mixers with improved chlorination systems, and these are nearing completion,” Cr Kearney said. "These upgrades will provide long-lasting benefits to all the communities receiving these necessary upgrades in our region.”

The Yelarbon and Talwood projects are on track for completion by June 2024 and should not result in any interruptions to either town’s water supply.
