Council is upgrading two water pumps to strengthen Goondiwindi’s flood preparedness. The Herbert Street pump station upgrade and the Callandoon Street stormwater pump upgrade are projects that highlight Council's commitment to safeguarding the community against potential flood events.

Mayor of the Goondiwindi Reginal Council, the Honourable Councillor Lawrence Springborg AM said these pump projects highlight Council's dedication to safeguarding the community and its infrastructure against the impacts of natural disasters.

“Both projects aim to strengthen flood preparedness in the area and as Council works towards completing these initiatives, residents can anticipate improved stormwater capacity in town during a flood event,” Cr Springborg said.

Both the Herbert Street pump station upgrade and the Callandoon Street stormwater pump upgrades are funded through the Queensland Reconstruction Authority's Local Recovery and Resilience Grant and are estimated to cost $220k.

This grant highlights Council’s commitment to infrastructure development and disaster resilience in collaboration with state-level recovery and resilience initiatives.

Herbert Street Pump Station Upgrade

The Herbert Street pump station upgrade, scheduled for completion by the end of 2023, addresses the need to increase the pump station's capacity for efficiently managing stormwater within the levee bank during flood events.

The upgrade includes the replacement of the existing pump on Herbert Street with a larger, capacity pump sourced from Callandoon Street. Additionally, new pipework will be installed to improve the discharge of stormwater into the Macintyre River.

Callandoon Street Stormwater Pump Upgrade

Council is also progressing with the upgrade of the Callandoon Street stormwater pump, a project that will assist with the protection of the township against flooding. The upgrade comprises of the replacement of the existing pump with a larger and more efficient model, the construction of a new pump shed, and the installation of new pipework for optimal flow of stormwater into the Macintyre River.

Councillor Rick Kearney who holds the portfolio for Water, Sewerage, Local Laws, and Local Disaster Management said as we live in a flood plain, Council is committed to upgrading stormwater infrastructure to better cope with future flooding events.
