Exciting news for movie-lovers in the Goondiwindi Region

  • Council is thrilled to introduce a 5-month Sunday trading trial at the Goondiwindi Cinema and Theatre
  • The trial begins in February 2024
  • The Goondiwindi Cinema and Theatre offer the perfect stocking fillers this Christmas with memberships and gift cards available now

Goondiwindi Regional Council will trial Sunday trading at the Goondiwindi Cinema and Theatre. The trial commences in February 2024 and ends just before the June school holidays. The 5-month trial will offer movie-goers an extended cinematic experience for all age groups in the local community.

Mayor of the Goondiwindi Regional Council, the Honourable Councillor Lawrence Springborg AM, said Council is invested in promoting the use of the cinema as a vital community space.

“However, we are aware that due to the expenses involved in extending opening hours on a Sunday and low patronage in the past, a careful evaluation of community needs will take place,” Cr Springborg said. “At this point, Council is gauging whether opening on a Sunday is a feasible option.”

Cr Springborg acknowledged the evolving landscape of entertainment with the rise of streaming services saying Council recognises the importance of social and recreational options within the community.

“We will be limiting the Sunday sessions to two movies,” he added, “The cinema is a great place to escape the summer heat.”

While the specific movie program for the trial period is yet to be confirmed, prospects include films such as "The Colour Purple," "Anyone but You," and "It Ends with Us," aiming to cater to a broad range of tastes, age groups, and preferences.

Councillor Susie Kelly who holds the portfolio for Rural Services and Community Facilities said the Sunday trading hours for the cinema will cater to a broad audience.

“We are fortunate to have such a wonderful facility that provides for everyone,” Councillor Kelly said. “I urge the community to come along and support this initiative.”

“The five-month trial period is to ascertain the level of interest in the cinema opening for extended hours, every Sunday,” she said.

It is important to note that during the April school holidays, the Sunday sessions will not be available due to the cinema opening extra weekdays. The April school holidays will have more than two showings on each opening day to meet with distributor demands.

Council encourages residents to support the trial for expanded cinematic hours and as the holiday season approaches, consider gifting the magic of movies with Cinema memberships. These memberships offer exclusive perks, including a complimentary ticket, 10% off future movie ticket purchases, and discounted candy bar items.

For a perfect stocking filler, Cinema gift cards are also available. Please note that the deadline for the online gift cards close Wednesday 13 December to ensure they get to the recipient in time. Physical in-store or electronic gift cards are encouraged.
