Goondiwindi Regional Council continues to promote and improve cross border outcomes after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Inverell Shire Council on Thursday 21 December.

The MoU formalises a shared vision to improve the local government areas in the border region, with Mayor Lawrence Springborg, Mayor Paul Harmon, Deputy Mayor Rob Mackenzie, and Deputy Mayor Kate Dight all participating in the signing.

The MoU prioritises key opportunities for collaboration including economic development with a focus on tourism, exploring a joint disaster management framework, joint advocacy for infrastructure upgrades that will benefit all, and exploring joint procurement initiatives to gain efficiencies and deliver cost savings to the border regions.

Goondiwindi Regional Council Mayor, the Honourable Councillor Lawrence Springborg AM said the MoU will achieve positive outcomes through each council working collaboratively.

“We are in a much better space to examine the liveability needs of residents in our shared communities and determine if there are any service gaps as we work in partnership with Inverell Shire Council,” Mayor Springborg said.

“Collaboration and advocacy are key factors in providing essential and effective management in these local government areas,” he said.

Inverell Shire Council Deputy Mayor Kate Dight said signing this agreement is in the best interests of our cross border communities.

“Collaborating with our neighbouring councils and formalising our shared vision will result in a range of community benefits for all residents,” Cr Dight said.

This MoU builds on a similar agreement entered into between Goondiwindi Regional Council and Moree Plains Shire Council in November 2023.
