Movie-goers in the Goondiwindi Region are in for an immersive cinematic experience as Goondiwindi Regional Council continues to upgrade its decade-old movie projectors with modern laser projectors.

A new laser projector will be installed in Cinema Two at the Goondiwindi Cinema and Theatre early this year.

This modern projector is the second of its kind to be installed at the heritage-listed cinema, following the first laser projector installation in Cinema One in 2022.

For ten years, the aging projector in Cinema Two provided a whooping 20,480 hours of cinematic enjoyment, equivalent to 10,240 movies, entertaining both regional residents and visitors to the Goondiwindi Region.

The new projector will provide an improved cinematic experience with crisp, vibrant colours and premium image quality, up to 30,000 hours of service, minimal maintenance, and quiet operation to entertain community members and visitors to the region.

Goondiwindi Regional Council Mayor, the Honourable Councillor Lawrence Springborg AM, said the new projector will not only enhance the cinematic experience but also reduce the need for frequent bulb replacements and also minimise power consumption.

“Ultimately, it will be more cost-effective for Council to run,” Cr Springborg said.

Councillor Phil O’Shea, who holds the portfolio for Health, Ageing, Arts and Culture, said he is excited about the future of cinema in the Goondiwindi region.

“While the old projector brought joy and entertainment to theatregoers for a decade, the new projector will continue to offer the community a fantastic cinematic experience with the promise of the very best in modern image quality,” Cr O’Shea said.

Councillor Susie Kelly, who holds the Rural Services and Community Facilities portfolio, said the investment in the second new laser projector is part of Council’s commitment to maintaining community facilities.

“The new software in the laser projectors will enhance the movie-goer’s experience,” Cr Kelly said. “The Goondiwindi Cinema and Theatre is a signature community asset and Council is very pleased to be improving the equipment for an improved experience for many years to come. I encourage residents to actively support the Goondiwindi Cinema.”

“Movie screenings are advertised on the Goondiwindi Cinema and Theatre Facebook page and the cinema website, and I encourage residents to look at securing a cinema membership as a way of staying in touch with what’s coming up at the cinema as well as movie discounts,” she said.

Movies showing now and into February include Aquaman and the Last Kingdom, Migration, Wish, Wonka, The Boys in the Boat, and Madame Web.

This project compliments Council’s recent announcement of a five-month trial of Sunday trading from February to June 2024.
