Inglewood's toilet art project reaches completion

  • The final element has been added to the Inglewood Apex Lion’s Park art project
  • The project is a joint initiative between Goondiwindi Regional Council and Acciona Energia – Macintyre Wind Farm
  • Local artist Michele Hollister’s artwork on the outside of the public toilets is a depiction of colourful butterflies fluttering among the turbines of the wind farm

Goondiwindi Regional Council erected signage last week explaining the idea behind local artist Michele Hollister’s mural on the outside walls of the public toilets, located in the Inglewood Apex Lion’s Park.

The signage positioned along the pathway to the toilet block completes the Acciona Energia – Macintyre Wind Farm funded project in which Michele painted colourful butterflies fluttering among the turbines of the wind farm.

While the project increases the beauty of the popular park area in the heart of Inglewood, it also adds a sense of pride and ownership among the community residents and promotes a very talented artist.

Michele said the artwork illustrates several qualities and characteristics found in the area.

“The butterflies have been observed in the Goondiwindi region and the Bulloak Jewel butterfly, featured on the front of the building, is listed as an endangered species,” she said.

“I’m sure the artwork will be enjoyed by residents and visitors for years to come.”

The Goondiwindi Region is well-known for its creative and inspiring artwork and this colourful depiction also adds to the Goondiwindi Region art trail.

Some popular artworks throughout the region are the award-winning Yelarbon silos, the Goondiwindi boat ramp toilets, and the Texas water tower mural.

The Acciona Energia – Macintyre Wind Farm provided funding for the project adding a sustainable element to the toilet block with solar panels to operate the lights.

The local Inglewood branch of the Lions Club were instrumental in providing guidance to Council and Michele during the project’s conceptual stage.
