On Australia Day, Goondiwindi Regional Council proudly joins in celebrating the many aspects that make Australia a great nation – the land, the spirit of a fair go, our lifestyle, democracy and the freedoms we all enjoy, but above all, Mayor, the Honourable Councillor Lawrence Springborg AM says we celebrate and honour the people and projects that have made an exceptional difference within our region.

Nominations for the 2024 Australia Day Awards are closing soon, Friday 24 November 2023, and in the spirit of recognising our community champions, there are five award categories in which family members, business owners and organisations can nominate individuals:

Citizen of the Year Award (27 years and above) - Presented to a resident of Goondiwindi Regional Council who has made a noteworthy contribution to the local community through outstanding service.

Young Citizen of the Year Award (under 27 years of age) - Presented to a young citizen residing in Goondiwindi Regional Council who has made a noteworthy contribution to the local community through outstanding service.

Community Project/Cultural/Community Event of the Year - Presented to an individual, group, club, association, or event that has made a noteworthy contribution to the local community.

Junior Sports Award (under 18 years) - Presented to a young individual who has excelled in his/her sporting field or made a noteworthy contribution to sport in the local community.

Senior Sports/Administration Award (18 years and above) - Presented to an individual or team that has excelled in his/her/their sporting field or made a noteworthy contribution to sport in the local community.

Note: All nominees must be residents of the Goondiwindi Regional Council area.

Nominations close Friday 24 November.

Mayor Springborg said there is nothing wrong with family members nominating each other for an award of recognition in a particular category.

"They are often the ones who have the most knowledge about the contributions these individuals have made,” he said.

The 2024 Australia Day celebrations will be hosted in both Goondiwindi and Inglewood.
